BREVARD, NC – The path to becoming a member of the prestigious national fly fishing team starts in western North Carolina when Transylvania County hosts the 2012 US Fly Fishing Team Southeast Qualifier, February 17-19, 2012.
“We’re really honored to have been selected as the first of only four qualifying events for the 2012 team,” says Kevin Howell, owner of Davidson River Outfitters and the primary sponsor for the competition.
Other announced qualifying events include the Western Regional in Reno Nevada, March 9 – 11, and the Northeast Regional in State College, Pennsylvania on March 10 – 11.
The three-day Southeast Qualifier will lure anglers, fly-tiers and judges from across the United States. The 32 competitors will have the opportunity to fish some of the southeast’s finest trout waters, including the Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest, the East Fork of the French Broad River and Tannasee Creek Lake.
“This is going to be a first-rate experience and a great test for all of the folks who are trying to make the national team,” says Howell, who has been fishing the streams of western North Carolina since the early eighties and “knows most of the fish on a first name basis.”
But what most excites this long-time guide and teacher is the opportunity the qualifier will provide for people who are interested in either taking up the sport or refining their technique.
“We have a unique situation here in Transylvania County,” says Howell. “Most qualifying events are fished on bodies of water that aren’t very accessible. But many of the streams and rivers for our event offer excellent access and are very spectator-friendly. If you have an interest in fly fishing and want to pick up the techniques of the best fishermen in the world, this is the place to do it.”
Howell’s goal is to run the best qualifying event possible with an eye toward hosting the National Championships, tentatively scheduled for late 2012 or early 2013.
“There are over 500 miles of fishable rivers and streams within a one-hour drive of Brevard,” says Howell. “And we’ve been treating visitors like next of kin for over 100 years. We’re hoping that combination of great fishing and wonderful hospitality will make us the natural choice for the nationals.”
